On Friday 18 May I attended the NZEI National Leadership Groups (NLGs) meeting in Wellington. I am a member of the Principals Council NLG and I am on there representing NZ Pasifika Principals Association (NZPPA). These meetings are for NZEI to share, collaborate and engage with their NLGs on the work of the Institute. It’s also a way NZEI continues to grow and develop is leaders across its members to strengthen and grow activism.

Some of the main points from the meeting:

  • Kua tae te wa – it’s time
  • Mana Taurite – Pay Equity – campaign our union is serious about it!
  • 30 year vision for education – engage and add your voice to the online and regional forums
  • Review of tomorrow’s schools – valuable discussion to be a part of – important to have your say and engage
  • Budget – May 2018 – step in the right direction – NZEI clear on what is needed to lift and strengthen our education system – lots of areas still needing addressing eg SENCO, 100% ECE qualified teachers, staffing only in roll growth areas, Teacher Aide Funding? etc

  • Important for ALL members to attend our June Paid Union Meetings PUMs and to also ensure your schools and Principals show up to theirs. What ever will be on the table we need to have all our members engaged in voting on proposals or offers etc
  • Only 54% of Principal members turned up to the last PUMs … not acceptable … some areas better than others.
  • How does the Principal and Worksite rep work together?
  • What messages are Principals going to share with staff, community, BOT, with each other?
  • How engaged is your Principal network, cluster, association, CoL, organisation etc in relation to our collective agreement negotiations and the other NZEI Campaigns?
  • Principals need to take on a leadership role in these campaigns and promote amongst your networks the use of social media, email, newsletters, blogs, personal invites, face to face etc to bring to the forefront our campaigns and ensure other principals are aware and engaged

  • Cathy Wylie – part of the review of tomorrow’s schools spoke to our NLG…
  • How can all parts of the system work better together?
  • How can schools work better with the MOE to raise student achievement?
  • Competition between schools is a huge issue and contributes a lot towards the problems and disparities between schools.
  • There is a lot of variability between schools.

  • Michelle Blick – Registered Education Psychologist – what is a Ed Psychologist trained to do?
  • Great slides she shared about Education Psychologists …
