The NZ Pasifika Principals Association (NZPPA) concluded its dynamic Term 4 Gathering and Annual General Meeting (AGM) this week, bringing together our principals, leaders, and aspiring educators for two powerful days of cultural immersion, strategic dialogue, and fellowship in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). This gathering was a vibrant testament to the commitment of our Pasifika leaders, reinforcing the strength of our aiga (family) network as we navigate the complexities of educational leadership.

Day One: Dinner at Szimpla – Some of our NZPPA Joined by Hon Carmel Sepuloni and Hon Willow-Jean Prime

The event kicked off with a relaxed NZPPA Dinner at Szimpla: All-Day Eatery & Gastro Bar. This evening provided an invaluable opportunity for members, especially those travelling from outside Auckland, to reconnect, share stories, and strengthen the bonds of fellowship that are the heart of the NZPPA. The evening was a perfect setting to transition from the demands of school leadership to the shared space of Pasifika unity.
Day two was packed with cultural, educational, and governance milestones, beginning bright and early at Kelston Intermediate School (KIS).
9:00 AM: Pōhiri and Iwi Kōrero
The day began with 45 of our members receiving a formal and moving Pōhiri at KIS. We were warmly welcomed by Matua Dallas Wichman speaking on our behalf, and representatives from Te Kawerau a Maki, who graciously welcomed the NZPPA leadership into their rohe.

Following the pōhiri, we engaged in a meaningful Kōrero with Te Kawerau a Maki over a small morning tea. This dialogue was essential for grounding our work in the local mana whenua context, ensuring our leadership remains culturally responsive and connected to the land and people of Tāmaki Makaurau.
10:00 AM: Talanoa with the Ministry of Education (MoE)

A critical session followed, featuring a Talanoa with lau afioga Filivaifale Jason Swann and the MoE team. This dedicated time allowed NZPPA members to engage directly with key Ministry officials, discussing current initiatives, advocacy priorities, and aligning the MoE’s strategic goals with the needs of our Pasifika students and communities.
10:30 AM: Learning from Local Innovation
The spirit of shared learning was a key focus, as we left KIS for two insightful school visits:

Glen Eden Primary: We met with Tumuaki Donna Soljan and architect lau afioga Lama Tone to view and discuss the design of their unique fale. This visit showcased innovative design principles rooted in cultural heritage, providing inspiration for how physical spaces can reflect and support Pasifika identity and pedagogy.
-
Kelston Girls College: We held a powerful Talanoa workshop with senior Pasifika students from both Kelston Boys and Girls. This engagement ensured that our strategic discussions remained focused on the lived experiences and aspirations of the young people we serve, centering their voices in our work.
12:15 PM: Luncheon and Cultural Celebration
The gathering paused for a delicious catered luncheon back at KIS, featuring a special treat: a wonderful performance by the KIS cultural groups. This segment was a joyous reminder of the talent, spirit, and heritage we champion every day in our schools.
1:30 PM: Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The afternoon shifted to governance with the NZPPA Annual General Meeting. Members engaged in vital constitutional discussions, focusing on proposed amendments to our constitution and reviewing the President’s report. The AGM solidified the Association’s strategic direction and elected the leadership committed to advocating for our schools in the coming year. We also spent some time thanking our NZPPA Executive Members not re standing in 2026/27.
3:45 PM: Mentorship and Fellowship
Closing the formal part of the day, a special Fellowship with Pasifika Aspiring Leaders from local Kelston schools took place. This was a unique opportunity for current Tumuaki to meet and inspire the next generation of Pasifika school leaders, sharing wisdom and encouraging their journey toward executive roles.
Evening: Farewell and Further Fellowship
The final evening rounded off the gathering with an informal dinner at Cleaver and Co, following drinks at Goode Brothers, allowing for continued fellowship and networking in a relaxed atmosphere.
The NZPPA Term 3 Gathering and AGM was more than just a meeting; it was a reaffirmation of the power of Pasifika leadership and collective voice. We leave Tāmaki Makaurau re-energized, strategically focused, and deeply connected to the cultural richness that drives our success.
