Conifer Grove School – Cultural Responsive Practice

Photo: Conifer Grove School – Takanini

Today I visited Conifer Grove School in Takanini to meet with the Principal Mr Raj Dullabh. This meeting was a result of another Principal in Papakura suggesting Raj meet with me to share his desire to see his Pasifika student data and outcomes improve and to brainstorm some next steps for him.

It takes a lot of courage and foresight to approach another principal who you had never met before and ask for their opinion and listening ear on how to tackle such an important issue. If anyone knows me I am always willing to offer any support or ideas in relation to anything to do with Principalship but particularly this area. I enjoy sharing my knowledge but also the knowledge I have learnt from so many others.

Raj is focussed on building his team of amazing teachers and support staff to ensure they cater for the needs of all their students. I heard today how passionate he is about making a real difference and so we have agreed that next term I will provide a PLD staff meeting on:

  • Building positive relationships for learning
  • Culturally responsive practices when dealing with Pasifika Students
  • Unpacking the Pasifika Values as found in the Pasifika Education Plan

This is only a start and it will be pitched to ensure that the staff are left with questions and ideas to contribute towards Raj and his management team figuring out where to next.

Raj is in his first year as a Principal and I had to work out today that this is my 13th year (lucky because I’m on study leave). As principals we are just like our students, Life Long Learners who are always learning new things everyday.

I’m very excited to support Raj and his staff but need to stress that I do this to also grow my own knowledge and understanding from what they will share and contribute during our session. This will contribute towards ensuring I continue to be an effective leader and principal in my own school.

My challenge is for other principals to approach others in their clusters or networks and have these courageous discussions like Raj and I did because no matter what the outcome it’s about sharing and ensuring our profession is strong.

Special thanks to Rebekah Gage and Mohammed Hussein who welcomed me while I was waiting in the foyer for Raj who was playing touch with the students … being made to feel welcome goes a long way.
